Lobe Pumps

Lobe pumps, also known as rotary lobe pumps, are a type of positive displacement pump that is well-suited for pumping viscous fluids. The efficiency of a lobe pump increases with the viscosity of the product being pumped. They are known for their flexibility, pulsation-free operation, and ability to handle both high and low viscosity fluids at various speeds. Within this page you will find out how a lobe pump works, its operating principle, as well the applications in which lobe pumps excel at and our range of Packo lobe pumps.

How do Lobe Pumps work?

A lobe pump operates by using two lobes, which can be thought of as gears, that rotate in opposite directions within a casing. These lobes are typically driven by external gears that ensure they rotate synchronously with a small clearance between them, avoiding direct contact. This then creates a vacuum which ultimately draws the fluid in. The fluid is then trapped in the spaces between the lobes and the pump casing and is then carried around to the discharge side. Here, as the lobes mesh together, the fluid is forced out of the pump. The following video shows you this in action with a Packo HP/LH Hy~Line.

What is the working principle of lobe pumps?

Lobe pumps operate based on the working principle of two rotors turning in opposite directions, with the fluid entering the pump and filling the space between the rotors. As the rotors turn, the fluid is carried around the outside of the pump chamber and forced out of the discharge port as the rotor lobes mesh together. These pumps can be designed with different rotor shapes, such as single, double, tri, multi, piston circumferential, or helical lobes, to suit the specific application and product requirements.
